"Every day, senseless acts of hate and discrimination are committed against innocent, undeserving people. Change needs to happen. We need to collectively work together to purge our society of the prejudice and ignorance that currently afflicts it. However, if we sit around and hope that change comes, it’ll never happen. Change is the result of taking action. I truly believe that my generation has the power and responsibility to get rid of the inequality and discrimination that still exists today. #IDefy because change starts with me." –– Shreya Joshi⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ——⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ In a day and age where traditional markers of humanity are up for grabs and our very sociopolitical culture frays at the edges, we are often left pondering our own truths to difficult, yet deeply personal questions: ⁣ ⁣ “How do I engage in and define activism?”⁣ ⁣ “How can I, an individual, strive to ensure the collective good?”⁣ ⁣ “How can #IDefy the parameters society has set for my level of understanding and development? “⁣ ⁣⁣ Our Redefy staff members each have uniquely-attuned answers to these questions — will you follow in their footsteps and continue to defy what sets the world back?
February 1st is a time for recollection, reorientation, and revolution of thought.⁣⁣ ⁣ With the start of Black History Month, we must make it a note to venerate influential black icons who have - with trials and tribulations - left their mark in the worlds of radical activism, critical social theories, essays, and dissertations, as well as the modernization of a moral compass that promotes equitability for all.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Black people who were at a crossroads with a myriad of other identities such as sexual orientation, gender identity, sex, theology, class, and interwoven ethnicities have been left out of the mainstream, monolithic novel that many recycle to romanticize black history. Not all stories of success are poetic, yet they are ones that make us empathize, contemplate, and reinvent. We must respect and honor the legacies of all black lives that have made a positive and tangible impact on our society today, no matter from whence they came. People of color have and always will be the generals of justice when it comes to righting entrenched sociopolitical norms — with every passing day, we must learn from their experiences, honor their humanity, and work towards amplifying their voices so that none feel left behind. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The world’s narrative is not only the victor’s story. It is yours and ours - all of ours. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ #BlackHistoryMonth
